R.Rash – Smokin Jakkit

28 January, 2011

Here comes the weekend bomb to prime you for the night out. If this bassline doesn’t make you want to jump up and punch air then science has failed and all is lost.

Pure and straightforward peak time madness produced by Ian David Loveday aka Eon who has sadly passed away in 2009. RIP. The 1996 record is rare and expensive but you can get it in digital form on Junodownload as well as other Trelik goodness! Yes, you owe me a drink.

One of the few new minimal producers who’s work sounds fresh and innovative. Boris Steffen aka Jichael Mackson does not release often, but manages to hit it right with most of his tracks. Always heady, inventive sound design and beautiful dubby atmospheres.

“So deep, so liquid”:)

The vinyl seems to be sold out but digital is available at WhatPeoplePlay, Juno, Beatport, etc.

This happens to be perhaps the first Herbert production I ever heard, it being included in the 2001 All Back To The Mine remix compilation and me being a huge fan of all things trip-hop back then (and now a bit). This also happens to be one of Herbert’s best deep house tracks – it’s haunting melodies and beautifully effected samples definitely stood out among the mostly colorful and over-the-top remakes that were filling the aforementioned CD.

Thanks to Herbert’s delicate approach, this version of the song is transformed from quirky and cartoonish original into a moody latin-flavored soundtrack for dancefloor introspection. It was stuck in my head so firmly that almost 10 years later it made me seek out the only vinyl version available on the Promo 12″. On the flipside (ha) are 2 broken beat versions by the All Seeing I, while next to Herbert’s masterpiece is a guitar-driven drum-n-bass remake by Moloko themselves. Did not expect that artwork, but the dogs seem to be happy at home.

Tonight I’m going to see the Soft Moon NY debut at Home Sweet Home. It usually takes a lot to impress me with a rock album but the one-man production by Mojave dessert native Luis Vasquez (joined for the show by Justin Anastasi, Damon Way, Ron Robinson) has got my attention from the moment I heard the first 5 seconds of the first single “Parallels”. What’s more is that the self-titled album out now on Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks is every bit just as good. Case in point:

Nice 909-like claps there. Although this music is heavily influenced by krautrock and industrial of yore (while videos and artwork are all early dada/abstraction), the whole seems to be much more than a nostalgia for the year 1981. This man’s brooding music is brimming with new and authentic destructive energy, the kind of darkness worth succumbing to for a minute.

I have just ordered The Soft Moon LP from Captured Tracks and so should you. One more show is coming up this Friday at Monster Island Basement.

Let UR masterminds teleport you to the distant galaxy. Ambient waves are gently washing the shores of subdued acid. Etching on the B side: “All is calm for now”.

It’s the stuff the dreams are made of..

This track is a part of a pivotal World 2 World EP that came out in 1992 and was re-released in 2006 on vinyl and files. The files can be bought on Boomcat, Beatport, iTunes, etc.

One of my very favorite records from last year. Although this is an edit job, Pilooski worked the amazing source material in the right direction taking it to a sweet climax. This is what an edit should be.

I was lucky to get my hands on one of this beatiful etched discs before they launched into the unobtainium territory.

Shackleton gets on remixing the indigenous rhythms of Congo, which naturally results in one of his best tracks so far. There’s a feelgood story behind the original.

Every once in a while an amazing record comes flying at you from a completely unexpected direction. Plain black label, no jacket, first release signified by infinity sign dash one. Put it on, listen to A1 – lo-fi broken rhythms and a mini-lecture on electricity, interesting; A2 – crunchy distorted old-school breaks, pretty cool; B1 – more of the same; B2 – …wwwtfff is that!?
